In a world often overshadowed by discord and division, an extraordinary musical event is set to inspire hope and unity.
On September 18, 2024, Omar Harfouch will present his highly anticipated “Concerto for Peace” at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, France. This event, crafted by a pianist and composer whose life story is as intricate as his music, will bring together some of the world’s finest classical musicians on one stage to call for global harmony. This ambitious work, taking the form of a symphony, serves as a voice for universal peace.
“Growing up in war-torn Tripoli, the piano became my refuge from the chaos outside, guided by the support and example of my activist parents,” Harfouch shares, reflecting on the circumstances of his upbringing. “Those early years in Tripoli and the mentorship I received during my time studying piano in Moscow taught me how transformative music can be. They showed me that even in the darkest times, creativity and dedication can lead to profound beauty. Today, I strive to channel that energy into compositions like the ‘Concerto for Peace.‘”
The Genesis of a Maestro
Born in Tripoli, Lebanon, and a resident of Paris since 1984 and a French citizen, Omar Harfouch has long been celebrated as a pianist, composer, and humanist. His early life was deeply rooted in a family of activist educators – a crucial influence on his values and artistry. Harfouch’s father, a dedicated teacher with the Carmelites and the Brothers Saint Jean Baptiste de la Salle, and his mother, a passionate advocate for women’s rights and a school director, instilled in him a commitment to societal betterment.
From a young age, Harfouch was captivated by the piano – an instrument he initially taught himself to play before pursuing formal training. His dedication was rewarded when he won a piano competition in Moscow, leading him to study under Natalia Vladimiravna Protsenko at the Glinka Conservatory in Dnipro, Ukraine. These experiences laid the foundation for his unique approach to music.
Weaving Melodies of Peace
The “Concerto for Peace” is a testament to Harfouch’s commitment to fostering global harmony. This composition earned him the creation prize at the 11th CAEL Awards in Dubai, highlighting its growing influence in both the musical and philanthropic spheres. The masterpiece blends classical elements with contemporary influences, creating a soundscape that resonates with a diverse audience.
Performed by the Béziers Méditerranée Orchestra under the direction of conductor Mathieu Bonnin, Harfouch’s vision is brought to life through their exceptional interpretation of the piece. Known for its wide-ranging repertoire, the orchestra’s performance of the concerto demonstrates its ability to navigate both classical and modern works with finesse. Harfouch’s collaboration with the orchestra reflects his deep involvement in both the musical execution and the broader humanitarian message of his work.
“Music has the power to unite us in ways that words cannot, ” Harfouch reveals. “My goal with the ‘Concerto for Peace’ was to create a piece that not only speaks to our shared humanity but also inspires action towards a more harmonious world.”
From Paris to Geneva: Spreading the Message of Peace
As part of his mission to use music as a tool for global solidarity, Harfouch will also bring his “Concerto for Peace” to the United Nations in Geneva on September 20, just two days after the Paris performance. The decision to perform at the UN – a symbol of international cooperation and peace—is both apt and profound. It amplifies the concerto’s message, emphasizing the power of music to transcend borders and promote unity on a global stage.
Orchestrating a Harmonious Future
As the world faces ongoing conflicts and challenges, Harfouch’s “Concerto for Peace” offers a beacon of hope. The piece showcases his exceptional talent and serves as a poignant reminder of music’s potential to inspire change. Recognized with accolades such as the Universalism for Peace Prize from the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (LICRA), Harfouch’s influence extends beyond his compositions, impacting various facets of life.
Reflecting on his journey thus far, Omar Harfouch notes, “The true impact of music lies in its ability to move people beyond the superficial and into a deeper understanding and empathy.” His work—especially the “Concerto for Peace” – embodies this philosophy, providing a powerful example of how artistic expression can pave the way for a more peaceful world.
As Paris and Geneva prepare to host this groundbreaking event, Harfouch’s call for unity through music is set to resonate far and wide, encouraging audiences to look beyond their differences and find common ground in their shared humanity.
